Who would the audience for you media product?

The target audience for my thriller film would be teenagers and young adults from the age of 16 to 30 years old. I would give this age rating because of the nature of psychological thrillers and I think anyone under the age of 16 tried to watch the film, I don’t think they would be able to understand it. Also having my protagonist’s teenagers themselves I don’t feel that the older generation would be able to get the same connection with the character as someone of a younger age.

I have satisfied my audience though the narrative and by following the codes and conventions of the thriller genre, so the audience can sort of expect what is going to happen. I think having my protagonist’s teenagers really strengthens that connection with the target audience because they can try and put themselves in the same situation and think about how they would act in certain areas of the film. I have also used different paced scenes to try and get the audience more involved and engaged with the product. This can be connected with Blumler and Katz’ ‘Uses and Gratifications Theory’, which asks the question “What people do with media?” rather than “What does media do to people?” which I think really contributes to what the audience is thinking.

The demographic for my target audience would be people from both genders from the age of 16 to 30. Their social background would be on a lower scale because teenagers aren’t going to be in high skilled work. This is why people who would watch my thriller would be in the d/e zones. They would also be in different forms of education ranging from a degree at university to doing GCSE’s in a secondary school. I know I have chosen the right target audience because of the research I have done which supports that people from this age range and education tire are huge thriller watchers.

I have tried to get the characters and the audience to have the strongest of bond possible. I have tried to make them as relatable as I could because this is going to get the audience drawing in and engaged the quickest. Obviously I have done this by having my characters in the same age bracket.
